Wikipedia Trail: From Hanuman to Cosmogony

by: Metropolitan Museum of Art

I started the journey with Hanuman I noticed a few things that were interesting. One of these details was that Hanuman was thought to be another piece of Vishnu to some interpretations. I did get the impression that he was just a little more important than everyone with the exception of Rama and Sita in the Ramayana. Interestingly, his name means, one with prominent or disfigured jaw. Hanuman

Puranas was a word that meant old, it refers to the genealogies of the the legends of their time. there are 400,000 verses with 18 Maha Puranas. Their influence is inspired by both the Hindu and the Jaina religious orders. The puranas are considered very prestigious, They are not Smriti.

Smriti seemed like a very pertinent topic with regard to this class. smrti includes the six Vedangas one of which is the Epics, including Ramayana and Mahabharata. Also listed is Dharmasutras, Arthasasastras, Dharmasastras, Puranas, Kavya, Bhasyas, and Nibandhas. According to Wikipedia, "Smiriti text exists in many versions, with many different readings. Smritis were considered fluid adn freely rewritten by anyone in ancient and medieval Hindu tradition".

Cosmogony the word comes from the greek and it means "to come into a new state of being". The Cosmogony is the study of the origins of the universe. It is interesting that we end up here because this is how the ancients explained the origins of their universe.
