Introduction

 This is me

Hi everyone, my name is Ryan, but you can call me Rhino. It is my understanding that there are three Ryan’s in the class. I have been in school forever. I started out in nursing a long time ago but it was not a good fit so, left school and joined a trade school. That’s where I learned to be an electrician. We went through five years of school and then we were ready to work here or go anywhere in the United States to work. So, a small group of us young guys ran the road. I have lived on both coasts and figured out that almost every place I’ve lived had something unique and interest about the place.

After working on the road for several years, there was a slowdown in the construction industry that led me to the conclusion that I needed to get back in school. So I decided that electrical engineering made pretty good sense. So I enrolled and attended the classes for a season only to find that I didn’t like what they were doing. The schooling is brutal, so I decided that it was not worth the fight. I came over to Construction management and am now one semester away from graduation. I accepted a job offer as a mechanical/Electrical engineer in the Engineering Services department. It appears that engineering could not do without me. Just kidding.

I like dry wines, and am developing a more sophisticate pallet. I also have recently discovered loose leaf tea. I am amazed how effectively they can change the mood of the drinker.

This is my first blog because I have never felt very good about writing or creativity. This is the biggest reason I took the class. I want to improve on these skills in general. Please feel free to critique me as you feel needed. I have thick skin.

  1. Hello Rhino! It was nice to get to know you a little bit. Reading this introduction has lead me to believe that you have more life experience than I, but trust me when I say hard work pays off. It is pretty cool that you got to live the work mans life and came back to school to try and better your work life. Good luck in your last semester!

  2. Aha, so we can call you Rhino: thank you for letting me know! I will update the different class listings so that now there are the two Ryans and Rhino, which will hopefully help people do a better job of remembering who is who. Excellent!

Congratulations also on going back to school and working your way towards graduation. Fantastic! And this class is definitely a place to explore your writing and imagination, practicing them both at the same time.

I didn't see an image here in the Introduction post, so that will be something fun to add, or a video. One of the best things about writing for the web is the whole mixed media aspect, being able to include images, videos, music, etc. So before the commenting comes around again at the end of Week 2, see if you can find a cool image or video you want to share with people in class; the video is even a Tech Tip if you want to grab some extra credit! :-)

  3. Hey Rhino!

Nice introduction! 1st off I feel like I am terrible at writing too so don’t feel like you’re the only one. Plus, your writing is good and interesting to read! That’s awesome that you came back to school and found something you really like. Also, you’re right engineering is brutal I question why I’m doing it every day haha.

p.s. I’m jealous you’ve lived in so many places. You should share some pictures sometime!

  4. Rhino, coming from someone that literally has lived in Oklahoma their whole lives, it's so crazy to me that you've lived so many different places! That sounds like you've been in school a LONG time. I am kind of curious how old you are from how much stuff you've done/experienced! I have never done a blog either and I'm definitely not a writer/creative at all, so you aren't alone. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Hi, Rhino! First of all, love the name. It’s pretty cool and unique for a nickname! Anyway, I’m a little jealous that you got to explore and live in so many places across the U.S. I, personally, would want to live in Seattle or Manhattan in the future! As for your many career aspirations, it’s good that you know what’s fit or unfit for you. It’s definitely better than staying at a job you don’t like at all. School is really brutal, but I know you can do it! So good luck on everything!

  6. Nice to meet you! Wow you have had quite the adventure with school and figuring out what you want! Engineering programs are really hard- I was in one for a week and nope-ed out of there! It is interesting that you have been trying teas. I am studying to be a dietician and I hope to learn a lot about them as well. It fascinates me that adding leaves to water can cure so many different things! I am excited to explore your blog!

  7. Hey Ryan (Rhino)! Great to meet you. I had a best friend when I was little named Ryan who we all called Rhino, so this made me smile! I think it's funny that you think you lack creativity. My boyfriend is an engineer and jokes about how he has none, either! We ALL are creative, just in our own ways. I'm so excited to read what you've come up with this far, and I look forward to continue to work on our creativity skills together!

  8. Hi Ryan! It’s nice to meet you.
Congratulations on your new job. I think it’s never too late to pursue a passion, and be whoever you want to be. I feel like the question “What do you want to be when you grow up” is never out of style. I’m a coffee lover, but have recently been experimenting with different teas. My favorite is chai and green tea! I’ll have to try loose leaf tea!

  9. I’ve seen your name before on the blog lists and was curious about it, so it’s definitely interesting to have some context behind it now. For the record, that’s an awesome nickname. I think it’s really cool that you’ve been able to draw on your life experience to see what would and wouldn’t end up being a good fit for you. Congrats on that job offer, and good luck with your last semester!

  10. Rhino, it is great to meet you. It seems that you have had quite the life experience so far. if there was one major that I wish I did it would probably have been construction management, that stuff truly fascinates me, but as it is I am a religion major. Contrary to you, and well most people I feel like, I hate wine, I will try it cause my wife tells me to, but I am more of a whisky neat kind of man. I hope that you enjoy the class and writing stories and that you finish college well. Good luck!

  11. Hey Ryan, nice to meet you! Your journey sounds crazy! Good for you for not settling for something that didn’t make you happy and for chasing after what you wanted! It is crazy that you’ve lived in that many places. I have tried a dry wine once and wasn’t a fan but I haven’t had hardly any wine before so it was fairly new.

  12. Hi Rhino,
Nice to meet you! It is amazing to read about the many life experiences you have had, and the journey of your life. I am sure that has definitely helped you develop as the person you are today. Congratulations on achieving your degree, and I am sure the future will be bright for you. Good luck with everything!

  13. Rhino, it's so nice to meet you. I noticed that you said that you've been to school forever. This statement resonated with me as my aspiring profession requires 6-8 years of schooling after undergraduate studies. So, I understand the idea behind being in school forever. However, you're close to graduating which is very exciting and rewarding I'm sure. I like how you are now trying the loose leaf tea. I do agree that tea really has an affect on the mindset and aura that a person possesses. I know that specific teas such as chamomile lemon, ginger peach, and lavender have calming effects. One specific brand that I like is Sleepytime.

  14. Hey Rhino!

It's nice to meet you and learn a little bit about you. I think it's so admirable that you have been so dedicated to finding your passion and have been pursuing schooling to find that fit. Congrats on being so close to graduation! And I totally agree with you about tea, it is amazing. My family has always been avid tea drinkers and I joined the bandwagon a couple years ago and now I can't stay away from it.

  15. Hi Rhino,

It is nice to meet you! That is awesome that you are studying electrical engineering. If I could choose a major other than the one I am currently in it would be mechanical engineering. They are both very interesting fields. I also joined this class to expand on the creativity in my writing. Good luck with the rest of your semester and endeavors on creativity!

  16. Hey Rhino it's nice to meet you! First off, I love what you have done with the layout of your page. It looks very futuristic and cool. Electrical engineering is so cool and I think you should be glad to be interested in something so important. The blog for this class is also my first blog as well! It's cool to be in a class with so many people who are learning to write for the first time in college haha. Good luck with your semester and your upcoming graduation!
